Increased use of the internet is putting pressure on UK companies to redesign their supply chains, according to our latest client research. Pat Sweet reports.

SURVEY STATISTICS

Getting on for half (46%) of the companies in the Consultants’ Advisory survey had a turnover in the £150 million to £5 billion plus range, while almost a quarter (22%) were in the £10 million to £50 million bracket.

For these larger companies, the internet is having a significant impact on both their own supply chain and those of their competitors.

The organisations were drawn from a variety of industry sectors, but manufacturing companies were especially well represented (50% of the sample), along with retailers (12%).

Both these sectors are acknowledged to be facing complex supply chain issues.

For many companies, reorganising their supply chain is proving to be part of a constant process rather than a one-off assignment.

Rapidly changing customer demand is one factor in this, with the internet emerging as the technology which enables – and requires – companies to move more quickly.
