In theory, efficient enterprises are flexible organisations who put the customer at the centre of their organisation, avoid building inventories and simplify their manufacturing process.
In reality, the way organisations operate depends largely on the industry they compete in and on their own corporate culture. Enterprises in the retail and consumer packaged goods industries tend to be customer-oriented, while manufacturing companies as a whole are still more product or technology-oriented.
