Q1: Overall view.

A: If IT people are in charge of the project, then it will be technology-driven and may not meet today’s needs, never mind the future. If it’s business-driven – and only a minority of information management projects are – then there is more likely to be an overall view.

Often, however, the focus is on the immediate concerns of what needs fixing, rather than on the longer-term strategy. And even where there is a longer-term vision, that can be affected by factors outside the company’s control, such as an acquisition. In that sense, the ability to react quickly to change is the more critical skill to have.
