Corporate Information Management (December 2001) Summary
Recognising the importance of information management is a ‘no-brainer’: yet our research among UK businesses suggests many companies pay not much more than lip service to this idea.
One problem is that this is an immature market, populated by ‘best of breed’ vendors from a wide range of backgrounds – including knowledge management, data warehousing, business intelligence, web content management, workflow and document management.
While this suggests a role for consultants in helping clients choose the right vendor(s) and integrate their strategies and solutions, the messiness of the market has deterred many companies.
Our briefing articles this issue identify some of the problem areas – from online information, dealt with by Craig Astfalck, to the relative failure of intranets, analysed by Andersen’s Chris Read.
Commentators like Keith Rounding at Cap Gemini Ernst & Young believe companies could soon be overwhelmed by the struggle to keep information up-to-date and relevant. But will clients heed the message?
