Issue Summary

Workflow, Document Management & Business Process Automation (May 2001) Summary

Despite being old or even potentially outdated technology, workflow, document management and related business process automation software remains as popular as ever – maybe even more popular since e-commerce kicked in.

The internet evolution has prompted companies to add new contact channels to customers, and to strengthen their collaboration and data sharing with supply chain partners. The more data is shared and moved around between companies in this way, the greater the need for workflow and related software to manage the process.

And with doubts over whether companies should use workflow systems ‘embedded’ in existing mainstream applications, or turn to specialist software, there is a clear role for consultants to play.

We assess this opportunity in our opening research article while elsewhere Ovum authors Alan Pelz-Sharpe and Angela Ashenden highlight workflow’s contribution in the age of electronic collaboration and integration, and Alison Harvey of CMG Admiral focuses on how the technology can help companies build customer loyalty.
