Tuning up the supply chain - Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

SURVEY STATISTICS

Getting on for half (48%) of the companies in the Consultants’ Advisory survey have turnovers in the £150 million to £5 billion range, and almost a third (32%) are in the £10 million to £100 million bracket.

The organisations are from a wide variety of industry sectors, although a substantial proportion (40%) are in the manufacturing sector, where supply chain operations have come under particularly close scrutiny in recent years.

Other industry sectors which are also facing new challenges in this area include retail (14%), distribution and logistics (16%), and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries (6%).

In many trading situations today, the customer is truly king, with supply chain systems required to play the part of the always responsive courtier. And requirements are constantly changing, as companies strive to provide the right combination of service and product to tempt an ever more demanding client base.

This year’s survey of UK companies’ supply chain activities (see box opposite for their details) provides further evidence of this trend – and confirms one of our key findings when we last looked at this market a year ago. For more and more companies, fine-tuning their supply chain is now becoming a habit rather than an occasional indulgence.
