Tom Welsh: expecta-tions are being set too high

It is now almost three years since Microsoft startled the IT community by announcing that Windows 2000 would be ‘surrounded by a new breed of web services’ based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML).

The .NET architecture, which can be summed up as a marriage of web services and the older COM+, was launched with much fanfare in the summer of 2000. Like most strategic Microsoft initiatives, .NET soon gathered momentum and much of the industry rushed to commit to it.
