The closer consultants ally with IT vendors, the more their independence is threatened. But does it matter? Fiona Czerniawska reports.

As Richard Hall, chief technology strategist at IT services company Evolution, points out: “If you don’t have in-depth, hands-on experience and an ability to show that you’ve tried and tested the solution you’re recommending, then you don’t even get on the shortlist for work.”
But independence comes with a potential cost to clients as well. Rules and processes designed to ensure objectivity (such as those governing public sector procurement) reduce continuity.
