Q1. Outsourcing and shared services.

A: Business process outsourcing has been popular for some time, but the incidence is increasing, particularly in the context of using offshore outsourcing.

Although this can bring benefits in terms of cost reduction and access to a highly educated workforce, there can also be a downside.

Many companies have concerns over the confidentiality of what is sometimes sensitive commercial information, despite guarantees by the providers. Secondly, there is always the problem of being locked into a provider and, when circumstances change, it can often be costly and difficult to renegotiate or break a contract.

This is often a problem in relation to acquisitions or disposals.
