Q1. Outsourcing and shared services.
A: These are two different approaches. A shared service
centre at least keeps control inhouse, whereas outsourcing
gives control to a third party. At worst, shared service centres
can be broken up if, for example, the company subsequently
changes its shape. Outsourcing is a much more permanent and
– to me – more dangerous step.
If companies do not like the result, how do they get out
of it? The cost and disruption of in-sourcing again is a nightmare.
But if companies cannot face that, then how do they open outsourcing
up to any real competition when the incumbent supplier holds
all the cards?
